LabCandy has many uses. Like...protection from ice water? LOL my friend Andy nominated me for the #ALSicebucketchallenge in order to raise awareness around ALS. For those of you that don't know, below is a quick explanation of ALS, courtesy of the ALS Association:
"Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed."
Clearly this is a worthy cause. The rules of the challenge are as follows:
1. EITHER dunk yourself in ice water and donate 10$ OR skip the water and donate 100$
2. Nominate at least 3 friends to complete the challenge after you
3. You must upload a video of all this within 24hrs of your nomination or YOU FAIL
This challenge has gone viral within the last few months and the ALS Association has raised over 1.2 million dollars thanks to the campaign. That's more than they raised in the entirety of last year! Finally, social media used for good and not evil.
In my video I thanked two very special women: Dr. Andrea Corse and Ms. Lora Clawson, both of whom are incredible female scientists and role models. Together with the Johns Hopkins ALS clinic, they are working hard to find a cure and are currently at the forefront of ALS research worldwide. Thanks ladies!
